Summer Roadtrip — July-August 2020-part5

DAY 5: VIRGINIA TO NORTH CAROLINA – Chincoteague Island to Croatan National Forest

Chincoteague, VA — 18 July 2020: Took a last drive down to see the ponies before leaving in the morning. Of course they were still just as small and far away (I had read in the interim that they are basically prevented from going outside a certain area and I could see in the distance there was a fence that kept them from coming near the road at all…

Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel, VA: Stopped to make some photos at the bridge-tunnel but we could only make photos from the start of the drive. Afterwards all the overlooks and stops were closed (due to Covid I guess)…

Enroute to Croatan National Forest, NC: It started raining heavily as I approached the area of the Croatan National Forest and I actually couldn’t see at some point while I was driving. Storm warnings flashed on the GPS for the area and I pulled over to see if I could book a hotel but everything near to my destination was full, so I would have to camp regardless of the weather. Luckily as I got closer to the area I was camping in I passed the edge of the storm and everything was quite dry again…

Oyster Point, Croatan National Forest, NC: Arrived in the late afternoon with time to get my tent set up before sunset, but when I got to my campsite there was someone else’s tent there. Luckily there was a campground host who sorted out the situation and the people moved, and I was able to get my tent up and my fire started in time to catch the sunset which was muted behind the forest trees. I took a short walk down to where the water of the Neuse River met the forest, then set up all my anti-mosquito paraphenalia for the night. It ended up a pleasant night with the stars clear overhead and the mosquito equipment working to keep them at bay. There was no breeze though, and when I went to sleep in the tent I was drenched in sweat and felt like I could barely breathe because of the humidity and stillness of the air…
