HOLIDAY ROADTRIP: DECEMBER 2019 – DAY 09


Valley of Fire NV — 26 December 2019: Up early again and on the road in time to catch the sunrise, which was pretty spectacular, but once it was up the sun quickly became obscured by the heavy low cloud layer that had made the morning color so interesting. I was getting a lot of weather warnings for another big storm headed this way, with likelihood of snow, and I needed to decide what to do…

Drive from Beatty to Tonopah NV — 26 December 2019: After lunch at the Burro in Beatty I got on the road to Tonopah where I had been able to book a hotel. Beatty was full. As I was eating my lunch the folks were talking about roads and passages into Death Valley being closed because of the storm. People were talking about needing chains and 4WD, and while I have the ultimate in 4WD I don’t have chains for my new 35″ tires. The drive from Beatty to Tonopah was surreal with snow in the desert and distant mountains. Even snow on the Joshua trees. I drove slowly and carefully and made some photo stops along the way because it was so incredible to be seeing and experiencing this even though it totally messed up my desert exploration trip plans…
