NY: Lockdown — March-April 2020 – part 2

LOCKDOWN WEEK 3: 1-5 APRIL

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 1 April 2020: Took a short walk through the county park wetlands down by the lake during my lunch break…

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 1 April 2020: Made a fire in the firepit and watched the moon rise between the clouds…

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 4 April 2020: Stopped to take a walk down by the lake, but the water level was too high to do the walk that goes around the edge of the lake, so I just walked back and forth a bit in the wooded area next to the roadside…

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 4 April 2020: Did some squirrel watching this afternoon. The mama squirrel is used to being photographed by now and the camera doesn’t scare her. There was another new squirrel who came today and rather than try to eat the easy seeds with mama squirrel, this one decided to try to get into the bird feeder. It was so funny watching him and he was really persistent and eventually succeeded in getting some seeds, but he knocked a lot more out of the feeder than he got to eat. After a while he gave up and went to eat near mama squirrel, though by that time there wasn’t much left…

LOCKDOWN WEEK 4: 6-12 APRIL

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 6 April 2020: I wanted to go for a walk at the small nature conservancy park that I like during my lunch break today, but it was locked and closed off. There was police tape blocking all the local town parks, which was a new thing (later I looked it up online and found that they were being shut down because people were not “social distancing”). I ended up just trying to take a quick walk at the old duck pond on the corner…

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 7 April 2020: Recently we have been ordered to “wear a mask” when we are outside in public. But of course masks are in short supply and must be reserved for the healthcare workers and first responders, so we were told to use a bandana or another kind of covering. My trademark bandana is suddenly on trend…

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 11 April 2020: Playing around with the bandana mask selfie…

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 12 April 2020: Today was Easter Sunday, and I spent much of the day indoors cooking even though I was alone on lockdown. I did get out for a little bit in the afternoon in the yard and did a little bit of skying…

LOCKDOWN WEEK 5: 13-19 APRIL

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 18 April 2020: Made a nice big fire for the evening call with Ladies Offroad Network for the first “Virtual Campfire” online chat…

Hither Hills State Park, Long Island, NY — 19 April 2020: Drove out east to see if I could find some solitude. The roads were less crowded than usual, and I arrived out to Hither Hills pretty easily…

Napeague, Long Island, NY — 19 April 2020: Then I set off for a short hike on the “Walking Dunes” trail in Napeague. It was hard to stay socially distant as there were people everywhere. I had to park halfway down the road at the trail head. But everyone was doing their best to keep a responsible distance as we walked along the trail through this beautiful pine barren sand dune landscape on the edge of the sea. I was able to do some photos, but the sand was all chewed up from the footprints of what looks to have been hundreds of people passing over it lately–on a trail that normally does not see much traffic at all! Still I was glad to be out there in this wild place, looking forward to returning when there are less people and it returns to its normal wilderness state…

Scallop Pond Preserve, Long Island, NY — 19 April 2020: After leaving Hither Hills I went to a wildlife preserve that is small and little known where normally I never see anyone, and here too there were a lot more people than usual, even in such isolated and remote places as this. Still it was beautiful and re-energizing to get back out into the wider world even if it is still quite close (and of course I kept to all responsible social distancing rules)…

LOCKDOWN WEEK 6: 20-26 APRIL

Nesconset, Long Island, NY — 20 April 2020: Relaxed in the backyard watching the squirrels and the beautiful colors of the sky at sunset through the trees…

LOCKDOWN WEEK 7: 27 April-3 MAY
