The Southwest: October 2019 — Day 7

DAY 07: 29 PALMS AND JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

29 PALMS, CA – 9 October 2019: I woke up to the desert and a view down over the town below. Across the way was a hilltop and quiet desert with the tall Saguaro standing guard over my solitude. I liked this place a lot. Last night I noticed there was a fire pit, and I decided that tonite I would finish my evening with a campfire. The desert morning air was cool as I took a short walk out to explore my surroundings before settling in to work as the sun rose. After work I set off for the Joshua Tree National Park. I wanted to at least drive the scenic loop and perhaps have a chance to stop and take a walk in that otherworldly landscape. Instead I stopped some place along the side of the road and just went for a wander between the strange trees that only exist in this place. I had hoped to catch a good sunset but I had lingered too long among the trees and the desert has a strange way of making it hard to know at exactly what time the sun will “set” in one spot or another depending on the location of canyon walls and distant mountains. I was a little “late” to my chosen location and missed the actual “setting” moment, but the moon gave me a good surprise, popping out behind the cliffs while the sunlight still spilled down across another spot of desert in between …
